General Surgery
What is general surgery?
General surgery is a surgical specialty that treats a variety of ailments. It can range from a simple procedure performed in an office setting to a more involved surgery done in the operating room. In addition to doing surgeries and procedures, general surgeons are also responsible for patient care.
While general surgery sounds broad, our surgeons are experts in a spectrum of conditions and diseases. They have experience in evaluating, diagnosing, treating, and managing conditions. You are in good hands with our general surgery team.
What types of general surgery procedures are there?
Our general surgeons are trained in the latest medical techniques. Here are some of the procedures our general surgeons provide.
Cholecystectomy
The gallbladder is a small organ under the liver on the upper right side of the stomach. A cholecystectomy is the removal of the gallbladder. Removing the gallbladder can be done laparoscopically through small incisions or through the traditional method with a longer incision.
Hernia Repair
A hernia is when tissues or internal organs bulge through the wall that surrounds it. Hernia repair is a surgical procedure to put the bulging tissues back in place. For larger hernias, the surgeon may add support to the wall to prevent another hernia. This can be done laparoscopically using small incisions or open surgery in which the surgeon makes a cut.
Appendectomy
The appendix is a 3- to 4-inch-long tissue extending from the large intestine. It can become inflamed. When left untreated, the appendix could perforate or burst. An appendectomy removes the appendix.
Mastectomy
A mastectomy is the removal of a breast. It’s used to treat breast cancer or prevent it for patients who are at high risk. In some cases, patients opt for a lumpectomy, which is the removal of a lump. The right procedure depends on the cause and use of other treatment options such as radiation or chemotherapy.
Hemorrhoidectomy
In some cases, using laser or other treatments isn’t enough to shrink or remove hemorrhoids in the anus. In this case, the surgeon performs a hemorrhoidectomy to remove the hemorrhoids.
Vascular Procedures
The vascular system consists of the blood vessels. These are the arteries and the veins, which consists of the tubes that move blood throughout the body. Vascular procedures treat a variety of conditions and diseases such as aneurysm repair, varicose vein treatment, and stent graft.
