Gynecology
Our highly trained gynecological surgeons at Court Street Surgery Center provide women with innovative options when gynecological surgery is necessary. Our facility offers less invasive surgical options for some surgical procedures that enable most women to return to daily activities in less time and with less discomfort than with traditional surgery.
Gynecology is a branch of medicine in which the physician specializes in the functions and diseases specific to females, especially those affecting the reproductive system. Gynecologists provide preventative care, diagnose any disorders related to the female productive system, and create a treatment plan.
Here are the most common procedures a gynecologist may perform.
Vaginal Hysterectomy
A hysterectomy is the removal of the uterus. A vaginal hysterectomy is the removal of the uterus through the vagina. It’s possible that ovaries and fallopian tubes may be removed through this procedure. This method tends to require less time in the hospital, costs less, and has a faster recovery time than an abdominal hysterectomy.
The surgeon may recommend a hysterectomy because of fibroids, endometriosis, adenomyosis, gynecological cancer, uterine prolapse, abnormal uterine bleeding, or chronic pelvic pain. Aside from cancer, most of these conditions may have alternative treatment options especially if the patient plans to get pregnant.
Hysteroscopy
A hysteroscopy is a procedure that allows the physician to look inside the uterus to diagnose and treat causes of abnormal bleeding. The gynecologist may take a tissue sample for a biopsy, remove polyps or fibroid tumors, or stop bleeding by destroying tissue using freezing, heat, chemicals, or electric current. It’s possible to have the hysteroscopy done in the doctor’s office or at an outpatient center.
D&C
D&C stands for dilation and curettage. It’s a procedure for removing tissue from the inside of the uterus. During a D&C, the surgeon dilates the cervix using instruments or medication and then uses a curette for removing tissue. Physicians may recommend a D&C to make a diagnosis, treat specific conditions affecting the uterus, or remove tissue from a miscarriage. This procedure may occur at the doctor’s office or at an outpatient clinic.
Laparoscopic Surgery
Laparoscopic surgery, sometimes called keyhole surgery, is a minimally invasive surgical technique that allows surgeons to operate through small incisions in the body. The advantage of this technique is that it speeds recovery time, minimizes scarring, and results in less pain. This technique is used in many procedures including those for rectal prolapse, diverticulitis, cancer, gall bladder removal, and gynecology surgeries.
Fibroid, Cyst Removal
Women who have ovarian cysts or uterine fibroids may need a procedure to remove them. Ovarian cysts are cavities inside the ovary that contain fluids. This can be done laparoscopically in which the surgeon makes tiny incisions and inserts a camera mounted on a thin tube so the surgeon can see the ovaries and remove them.
Fibroids, on the other hand, are non-cancerous tumors in the uterus. Usually, they don’t need treatment. But if the fibroids need removing, there are a few non-invasive treatment options. The recommended procedure depends on the patient’s case. Options include MRI-guided focused ultrasound surgery, uterine artery embolization, radiofrequency ablation, laparoscopic myomectomy, hysteroscopic myomectomy, and endometrial ablation.
